Emanuela Galliussi's stunning audition for Going Bongo

Actors. Seen to many around the world as professionals associated with glamour, fame, "celebritism" (the new word I invented that works:)). To an independent filmmaker, they are the individuals actually carrying the story. In a simplest form, these are the people hired on the project to embody the character created on the page and deliver the performances that suspend reality for the viewers.
Even if it is for just 2 hours.

Since the introduction of Reality TV and the revelation of "real" human emotions on screen, the new buzz word for acting is "Not Acting".

I first saw this performance by Hugh Laurie on You Tube when he auditioned for House. When the audition began, I thought that he was casually talking to a casting agent about something. That's how good the guy is. "The Audition" had began and the "Not Acting" was in progress :)

                                                 Hugh Laurie's House Audition

On the independent film level, having Hugh Laurie in your film, is as far fetched as having the first black American president (oooops).
But seriously, its pretty tough, but not impossible.

What we do have though, is a large pool of very good actors, who have acquired the necessary skills and experience to deliver great performances without having a star name.
In our project, we were very fortunate to tap into this "undiscovered talent pool" with great success. With an exception of very very few actors, the cast of Going Bongo which had more than 40 actors was pretty stunning.

Emanuela Galliussi who plays Dr.Laura Carmenucci, a volunteer doctor from Italy, flew herself from New York to Los Angeles to audition for the role. Not many or any actors do that anymore, unless its a chance to work on the next Quentin Tarantino film.

Such drive and dedication was apparent when she delivered a stunning performance, that pretty much blew hundreds of other actors in US and Italy who competed for the role, away like the Canadian Flag Leaf (Not a good comparison, the Leaf is still on the flag for hundreds of years).
But you get the point.

Oprah Winfrey lands in Serengeti and nobody gets a car

For those of us who thought, "everyone will get a car", it was not to be.

The country was still buzzing from the visit of the most important person in the world, president Barack Obama.  Suddenly, someone as powerful visited Tanzania this weekend.

While most of her travel plans weren't initial revealed, Oprah Winfrey visited Serengeti National Park on July 13, 2013 and left the same day. This self made, hard working, billionaire had a private tour of the Serengeti National Park and met with the Tourism officials in the country.

TANAPA (Tanzanian National Parks) is in charge of promoting Tourism of National Parks in Tanzania. Their impeccable work of promoting Tanzanian tourism and Tanzania in general, has generated a lot of interest in Tanzania abroad.

While shooting Going Bongo film, we were fortunate enough to use their beautiful park in Saadani Tanga. Below is film's promo where some of the footage was used:

Whether Oprah also plans to bring showbiz type projects to Tanzania, still remains unclear. But if her company does put its financial muscles towards such projects, then and only then, will everyone get a car :)

Going Bongo: A “Smart Partnership” between Tanzania and US

Going Bongo is a comedy-drama film about an American doctor, who mistakenly, volunteers to work in Tanzania for one month.
Its a collaborative project between American and Tanzanian filmmakers, and is bound to become one of the biggest film to ever come out of Tanzania and probably East Africa.

The large portion of this film was shot in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania with the remaining portion shot in Los Angeles, California. The film has involved actors, writers and crew from both countries with others coming from the UK, Kenya, Serbia, Italy, Turkey and a few other countries.

Saadani, Tanzania. A touristic safari spot where some of the film was photographed

The lead role is played by a Tanzanian actor Ernest Napoleon supported by an American Ashley Olds, an Italian Emanuella  Galliusi and a Kenyan Nyokabi Gethaiga.

Other very key roles have gone to legendary Tanzanian actors such as Ahmed Olutu “Mzee Chilo”, McDonald Haule, Sauda Simba Kilumanga and one of the best radio personalities in the country, Evans Bukuku from Choice Fm.
Ahmed Olutu “Mzee Chilo” was cast as Dr.Yazidi

Other than cast and crew, Tanzania was a key location for most of the shoot, with 75% of the whole film photographed here. Making it an ideal location for an international film of this caliber.

As of this writing, the film has been completed, awaiting a world premier, with a trailer being scheduled for a release shortly.

With President Obama bound to visit Tanzania on July 1st and more than 700 businessmen for the event called Smart Partnership International Dialogue 2013, its clear that the relationship between Tanzania, US and the International community has never been stronger.
